Following a four year campaign led by Monica Lennon MSP, Scotland became the first country in the world to provide free period products for all when its parliament unanimously passed The Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act at its final stage on the 24th of November 2020.
The Act, which was given Royal Assent on 12 January 2021 and came into force on 15 August 2022, places a legal duty on local authorities to make period products available for all those who need them and goes some way towards eradicating period poverty and promoting period dignity.
With this Act, Scotland has made history in its aim to silence the stigma that surrounds menstruation and remove gender barriers. This is a big step towards creating a fairer and more equal society.
The final stage of the Period Products Bill passed on 24 November 2020.
